Chevauleger-Regiment Löwenstein

Austria, 1758–1763

Chevauleger-Regiment Löwenstein, Austria 1758–1763 By decree dated 1 Febrero 1758, Feldmarschall-Leutnant Graf Löwenstein raised a Chevauleger-Regiment of two companies as a component of his Dragoner-Regiment by the same name. The new regiment received its own commander and the name Jung-Löwenstein. On 14 Enero 1759, the Chevauleger-Regiment was increased by eight companies, and by decree dated 22 Marzo 1759 it was separated from its parent regiment.

FML Graf Löwenstein turned over his Dragoner-Regiment to Feldmarschall-Leutnant Saint-Ignon and became the Inhaber of the new Chevauleger-Regiment Löwenstein. In 1761, the Chevauleger-Regiment was increased to the twelve company establishment of the Austrian dragoon regiments. During the Seven Years’ War, Löwenstein Chevaulegers fought at the Battles of Hochkirch, Kunersdorf, Landeshut, Liegnitz, and Freiberg.

Light straw-coloured leather breeches were worn on campaign. Chevauleger-Regiment Löwenstein was distinguished from Dragoner-Regiment Saint-Ignon by its white buttons.
